They have been so long and so generally associated with the relics of by-gone times, and with the superstitions of mediaeval religion, that all accurate knowledge respecting them has been regarded as more curious than useful, and has been neglected as such. The result has been, that a Convent of Nuns is ordinarily associated in our minds with some tale of dis appointed affection in mediaeval romance, or with some fearful tragedy of dark and despotic times.
