Excerpt from The Toxic Amblyopias, Their Classification, History, Symptoms, Pathology, and Treatment: Being an Essay to Which Was Awarded the Alvarenga Prize of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, October, 1894 Although the demonstration of axial neuritis has done much to clear away the fog which prevented the penetration of knowledge into the exact nature of the most important visual disturbances which arise under the in¿uence of certain toxic substances, there are still many facts to be learned in regard to the etiology and pathology of a number of drug-amblyopias, and they furnish an inviting field for study and research. Therefore, a collection of our information with reference to them is desirable. To this end the present essay has been written. The literature, which has assumed large proportions, has been carefully studied, and as far as possible the references contained in the following pages have been verified and original sources have been consulted. From this study have resulted the paragraphs devoted to the history, etiology, symptoms, diagnosis, prognosis, pathology, and treatment of the various types of visual disturbance which may be caused by drugs and toxic agents.
