Theodora "Twopence" Wood arrives at Queen Æthelfleda's with her twin sister Penelope, full of hope that at school things might be different, that she might somehow fit in. Her hope is soon dashed: Penny is quickly embraced by the other girls but Twopence finds herself once more on the outside. When she comes across a mangy cat, violently expelled from the kitchens, Twopence adopts him and soon collects further "Wee Poor Things". She makes plans to help each of her waifs and strays, but who will help Twopence herself?
