This is true respecting certain questions, but, at the same time, it is true that the great body of our modern science, the science involved in the decision of such questions as those discussed in the present volume, can be brought fully within the reach of the understanding of any well-informed man of average intelligence, if an honest effort is made to do it. Such a man might not be able to construct the argument for himself, but when it is fairly presented he can judge and reach his conclusions for himself as safely as the scientist can. Edward Clodd, F. R. A. S., must have believed this in so far as the questions concerning primeval man are concerned, for he wrote his "Childhood of the World" for the use of youth in a course of education. Professor Huxley must have believed this in so far as evolution is concerned, for most of his "Lay Sermons and Addresses" and his New York "Lectures on Evolution" were originally addressed to popular audiences.
