Excerpt from The University of Missouri Studies, Vol. 1Hat musical theory, if it is to be regarded as a scientific theory, must be psychological, need hardly be emphasized. No theory of any department of aesthetics can be other than psychological and musical theory is a department of aesthetics. Neither the physicist nor the physiologist can prove by physical or physiological laws, why we must enjoy certain combinations of tones. It is the psychologist's task to determine the aesthetic laws which describe the subjective as well as objective conditions of aesthetic enjoyment. That physical and physiological concepts are used in the formulation of these laws, is a matter of course. But the physical and physiological concepts cannot be the only constituents, psychological concepts must also enter into these laws. The aesthetic significance of the former consists only in their relation to psychological concepts.Aestheticians have often overlooked this fact, particularly with respect to music. Some have tried to demonstrate that we must enjoy certain combinations of tones, because vibrating bodies produce overtones. Others have demonstrated the same proposi tion by means of physiological facts. Such methods, in aesthetics, are metaphysical, not scientific. The aesthetician's task is to de termine that - not why - enjoyment of combinations of tones de pends upon objective and subjective conditions, which may be - no one can tell a priori - psychological or partly psychological, partly physiological and partly physical.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
