Department of AgricultureFor a number of years the value of low temperature conditions in zoological research has been recognized and experiments involving various low temperatures by the Zoological divlslon have been used in a wide range of investigations on parasites affecting man and animals.The object of such investigations has been to ascertain those temperatures at which the Vitality of the organisms is destroyed. Results of some of the tests have been incorporated in regulations with regard to meat inspection procedures and information from other tests has been used as a heels for practical control measures against parasites of livestock.In case of parasites that occur in meat iood animals and are transmissible to human beings, an extensive series of investigations on trichinae involved the subjection of pork and pork products to low temperatures. Some of the investigations involved refrigeration of infected meat at temperatures of 5° F. And higher for continuous periods of 20 to 30 or more consecutive days.
