Excerpt from The Valkyrie: First Day of the Trilogy, The Ring of the Niblung Act I. The interior of Hunding's dwelling. Siegmund, flying from his enemies, wounded and weaponless, enters and lies down to rest at the fire where he is presently found and tended by Sieglinde, Hunding's ivife. Hunding on his return home consents to grant Siegmund shelter for the night, but discovering soon that he is an enemy of his clan, the Neiding's, challenges him to mortal combat 0)i the morrow. Later Sieglinde joins Siegmimd and, in the course of a scene in which they confess their mutual love, shews him a sword buried in the stem of a large tree in the middle of the stage which had been placed there by an aged stranger during her wedding feast. Siegmund draws out the sword and the lovers prepare to fly together, discovering at the last moment that they are the twin children of Walse (a name assumed by Wotan during his wanderings on earth). Act II. A wild rocky place. Wotan order Briamhilde to protect Siegmund in the coming fight with Hunding. His design is that Siegmund and Sieglinde shall beget a race of heroes who may defend Walhall against his foes He is however presently forced by Fricka, the guardian of vows and especially of marriage, to reverse his order.
