This dollar continued to be the unit until 1873 when the United States demonetized silver. This she did in imitation of the financial policy of Great Britain, Ger many and France, although in the latter country the demonetization was a forced one. The dollar thus dropped from our currency was then slightly in advance of a gold dollar in value.
