Excerpt from The Vicissitudes of a Life, Vol. 2 of 3: A Novel
My clothes were all compressed into a knap sack, and in my hunter's garb, with thick, coarse shoes upon my feet, I plodded on my weary way, over mountain and moor, through field and forest, in the town and in the country, seeking, wherever opportunity seemed to present itself, for some employment, but finding none. All I could offer to do was to teach, and the whole of Europe was so over loaded with persons in the same situation, who had been driven forth from France by the Re volution, that it was hardly possible to find any profitable occupation of that kind.
