Excerpt from The Yale Literary Magazine, Vol. 15: December, 1849While the great body of the inhabitants, even the most patriotic and far-seeing, were still advocating reconciliation, Paine struck boldly out for independence. He declared unequivocally against monarchy and hereditary succession, and in favor of a republic, while such men as John Adams, in common with nearly all his contemporaries, eulogized the constitution and government of Great Britain, as the most sym metrical and best adapted to human wants that the world had ever seen or could expect to enjoy. The design of Common Sense was to maintain these ideas which Paine fondly cherished, and which gave birth to the Revolution, and constitute the comer-stone of our institutions. The work discusses, first, the origin and design of government in general, with concise remarks on the English constitution. Paine's theory is clearly and brie¿y stated in the following paragraph.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
