I remember the first time when, as I watched a man pass me on a bicycle in the street, his legs suddenly stopped go ing round, and the bicycle still went on with his feet on the pedals. I had never heard of such a thing as a freewheel, and I thought I was suffering from hal lucinations. How much more fantastic was the sight of this little man on his great wings up in the air.
