Excerpt from Transactions of the Obstetrical Society of London, Vol. 15: For the Year 1873, With a Life of Officers, Fellows, EtcWriters in medical periodicals have severely criticised, and some have even gone so far as sternly to condemn, the decision of this Society, but it is evident that such objectors have never had opportunities of observing the direful con sequences that so frequently result from untaught ignorant women undertaking to conduct labour. At present there is no law to compel women midwives and others to qualify themselves to the simple extent to which I have alluded.
