Excerpt from Two Difficulties in the Way of Independence: Ne Temere DecreeCook's second article. Utilizing the opening afford ed by the criticism of the' 'kingdom Papers', Mr. Ewart expands his theories of the future relations between the United Kingdom and the daughter nations. His main ostensible ob j eetion to imperialism ranges round his assertion that the words empire' and 'imperial' are no longer applicable to these relations, because they connote subjection. My reply to this was that they have got to connote something else in the future, but Mr. Ewart will have none of such arguments. To him a spade is not a spade unless you call it by its proper name. 'canada' he says 'is really (but not nominally) independent - legislatively, executively, fiscally, judicially, and with regard to foreign rela tions, ' and yet he spends his time (as a footnote tells us) in the 'advocacy of Canadian independence.' In other words, having grasped the substance, he fights for the shadow - the elimination of the word 'empire.'About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
