Excerpt from Two Essays on the Law of Primogeniture Edmund Yorke, M.A., late Fellow of St. Catharine's Hall, bequeathed to the University of Cambridge a sum of money for the purpose of founding a Prize for an Essay on the Law of Primogeniture. A scheme for carrying out the bequest received the sanction of the Chancery Division of the High Court in 1875, and it was ordered that a prize should annually be offered for competition for an essay on some subject relating to "the Law of Property, its Principles and History in various Ages and Countries." The prize was first offered in November, 1876, when the subject announced was "The History of the Law of Primogeniture in England, and its effects upon Landed Property." The prize was awarded, in February of this year, to the two Essays contained in the present volume, which were pronounced by the Examiners to be of equal merit. They are now published, in accordance with the requirements of the University. It may perhaps be convenient to add that copies of either essay in a separate form may be obtained from the Publishers.
