Excerpt from Two Sermons on the Kind Treatment and on the Emacipation of Slaves: Preached at Mobile, on Sunday the 10th, and Sunday 17th of May, 1810, With a Prepatory Statement It will immediately be perceived that the following sermons contain many arguments which have been more ably advanced in other writings, and that, considered separately from the occasion, there is little in them to detain the attention of one who has attended to the subject before. They were meant for the benefit of the people to whom they were addressed, and for no other purpose. In Mobile, Slavery was not to me an abstraction. Here were the slaves about me. I was served by them at home, and at the houses of my friends, and the relation between them and their masters seemed, and still seems to me, as much within the scope of Religious instruction, as the relation between husbands and wives, or between parents and children. Had 1 been silent on the subject, my silence would have been construed into assent to things as they were, and the duty in this relation was too difficult a matter to be enforced with sufficient fulness and solemnity in private.
