The inspiration for this book came when the COVID-19 pandemic shone a light on the volume, proactivity and resourcefulness of initiatives emerging from unexpected places. The authors witnessed actions which contrasted with the responses from many in formal leadership positions, including those in government and leading corporations, and were inspired to explore them more fully and beyond the pandemic. Unleadership is defined in this book as a set of acts and practices that are undertaken in a spirit of spontaneity and generosity for social good. Unleadership: The Remarkable Power of Unremarkable Acts identifies four dimensions: paying it forward, living with the unknown, catching the wave, and confident connecting and collaborating. It exposes the power that is unleashed when members of the community discover their own power to act and reclaim what they have delegated to their leaders. Unleadership is introduced as an inclusive concept, that complements rather than opposes leadership, foregrounding everyday leaderly acts and practices. The authors observe that unleadership can emerge from everywhere, including from those in formal leadership positions. Based on extensive research carried out by the authors, this book highlights the flourishing of alternative forms of leading that encourage rethinking ideas of leadership and followership. Ways are suggested in which organisations and practitioners can enrich their leadership capacity by providing practical guidance for cultivating unleadership practices to co-exist with and complement leadership practices. This book is an invaluable resource for leaders and managers in public and private organisations as well students of leadership and organisational development.
