Excerpt from Vanderings With the Muses: Or Fugistive Poems
Song of the Old Year
Hush! hush! I am dying, come, mourn for me now,
For the cold hand of death has been passed o'er my brow,
Let the muffled bells chant a sad knell o'er my grave,
Ere obliviion engulph me beneath its dark wave.
You welcomed me in with fond gladness and mirth,
And happiness circled round many a hearth,
But onward I sped, like a ghost in the night -
And eyes became dime that once beam'd with delight.
And onward, and onward, and onward I sped,
And the Peer and the Peasant - I witnessed them dead:
And the maiden that hail'd my bright advent with glee
Lies now in the valley, beneath the yew tree.
