These stories have been accumulating for over a half-century, since the authoras days at University of Iowa Graduate Writers Workshop. Their characters and events appear in most cultures and are represented here as variations occurring in three countries: China, Spain, and America. The character of Misha, an unemployed auto mechanic from Harbin who is the essence of innocence, can be found in many American habitats, as well as Simpkoff, a comical Shanghai teacher who possesses a somewhat misplaced intelligence. History has been recognized as a story where the imagination is channeled so that only glimpses of vital life are visible, imaginative fiction widens the scope. The focus here is on the remote ripples that may swell into sweeps of modern historical movement and attenuate for years after.
