Walking Lessons for the Elderly

Burro Flats may be a dusty, dejected sort of town, yet it's also a remarkable place where tiny miracles can change lives and where lonely misfits are granted a moment of grace. It is a town populated almost completely by old people, with all their baggage-literal and metaphorical. Aging loners, drinkers and dreamers, people at the end of the road, afraid of and yet desperate for human connection, trapped by bodies that may no longer work so well and haunted by their pasts. Slender threads of connection link the stories, popping up here and there like cactus flowers. Ultimately, these stories make it clear that no matter your age, everyone needs a bit of "assisted living."Cooper Gallegos developed a passion for the desert as a child when she spent summers in a one-room adobe in a small Mexican village. Twenty years later, as a young widow, she and her two sons settled in the Mojave Desert, six miles from town in a house with no electricity or running water. There she found a home, a community and inspiration for a wealth of stories. She is the author of The Waterhauler, A Desert Story and lives in New Mexico with her partner and two dogs. She is currently working on a novel.
