Twenty years later, as a young widow, she and her two sons settled in the Mojave Desert, six miles from town in a house with no electricity or running water. There she found a home, a community and inspiration for a wealth of stories. She is the author of The Waterhauler, A Desert Story and lives in New Mexico with her partner and two dogs.
