Printing was an early art, so that we find three editions of the Bible printed here in German before an English one was made elsewhere in the colonies. The first Mennonite church, the first Dunkard church, the first religious paper, the first hymn book, the first work on pedagogy, the first type casting and the first public protest against the institution of human slavery are a few of the results of the enterprise and public spirit of its German settlers and their descendants.
