What Is Said

Angebote / Angebote:

This book investigates the relationship among thenotions of meaning, content, and what is said. It iswidely held that indexicals - words like 'this', 'I', or 'today' - contribute their reference, and nothingbut their reference, to the semantic content, andthereby undermine any tentative identification ofsemantic content with lexical meaning. Against themainstream view, Isidora Stojanovic argues thatsemantic content is lexical meaning, for indexicaland non-indexical expressions alike. In Chapter 1, she lays down the proposal in all due detail, explaining how to think of the semantic content ofsentences containing indexicals, and articulating therelationship between content, truth, and reference. In Chapter 2, she presents a number of problems forthe existing accounts of what is said, and then showsthat if we think of semantic content along the linesof her proposal, we may account for the problematiccases while identifying the asserted content (or whatis said) with semantic content. In Chapter 3, sheextends her account to definite descriptions, epistemic modals, and proper names.
