His involvement in the civil rights movement south of the border and his criticism of Canada's purported openness and tolerance earned him the title of "Canada's angriest black man" - the implications of which rankled him for the majority of his working life.CELEBRATED WORKS:Clarke's most famous book, The Polished Hoe (2002), won the Commonwealth Writers' Prize, the Scotiabank Giller Prize, and the Trillium Book Award. His novel More (2008) was longlisted for the Giller and won the Toronto Book Award. In 2012, at the Toronto International Festival of Authors, Clarke was awarded the $10, 000 Harbourfront Festival Prize "on the merits of his published work and efforts in fostering literary talent in new and aspiring writers." His body of work has also been honoured with the Martin Luther King Jr. Achievement Award for Excellence in Writing and the W. O. Mitchell Literary Prize.
