Excerpt from Why I Still Believe That Moses Wrote Deuteronomy: Some Reflections After Reading Professor Robertson Smith's Additional Answer to the LibelN the following pages I wish to deal with the critical evidence presented by Professor Smith in favour of the opinion that parts of the Pentateuchal Law are later than the time of Moses, and that in particular Deuteronomy is of an age subsequent to Hezekiah's reforms. My health, and other circumstances beyond my control, have kept me out of the discussion in the Church Courts and now that the action of the General Assembly has tended to awaken hopes of a settlement of the legal questions in a way in which all parties may be enabled to acquiesce, I desire to write nothing which may in any way prejudice any one. But there is another ques tion that would have to be answered, whatever course might have been taken in the Courts of the Church namely, That is the value of the evidence alleged in favour of Professor Smith's critical views as they stand out in contrast with the opinions generally held in this country, that Moses is the author of the Pentateuch In attempting to answer this, I shall confine myself to the statement that he has made in his Additional Answer to the Libel.
