Eric Pratt was educated at Carey Grammar school, Melbourne, and The University of Queensland where he graduated in Law in 1965. He practised as a barrister and solicitor in Papua New Guinea from 1965 to 1972 and then as a barrister in Queensland as junior and then Senior Counsel until his appointment to the District Court. Pratt was described in the District Court Annual Report, 2000-2001, as a hard-working and quick thinking judge, known for his ability to manage a court in a dignified but good-natured manner. "Witnesses to History" shows that he is also hard-working and quick with a tale of his family line, in a story which stretches from England to Australia in the hard days of the 19th century when Australia was in the grip of Federation fever, when bushrangers roamed the countryside, and into the 20th century and two World Wars threatened to tear humanity apart.
