Woods, Forests, and Estates of Perthshire

Angebote / Angebote:

Excerpt from Woods, Forests, and Estates of Perthshire: With Sketches of the Principal Families in the Country The substance of this work originally appeared as a series of sketches in the Perthshire Constitutional, where the subject was found to awaken sufficient interest to induce me to issue the present volume. In its new form, the work has, to a large extent, been rewritten, and much important matter has been added. The main object I had in view was to trace the history of Forestry in Perthshire, which is largely the history of Forestry in Scotland, and to show the great improvement which has been effected upon the country by planting, chiefly during the last one hundred years. This naturally led to inquiries regarding estate improvements generally, and directed attention to the many old and notable trees in the county, as well as to the history of the various estates visited, and the families to whom they belong. I take this opportunity to return my warmest thanks to the numerous friends - landed proprietors, factors, land-stewards, foresters, &c., - who have aided and encouraged me in my inquiries, only a few of whom I have had occasion to mention in the course of this work. I am specially indebted to the many proprietors and others who placed at my service valuable estate and family papers and rare works of reference, by which I have been enabled to ensure the greatest accuracy possible in the accounts of the various places and families. The Illustrations have been engraved by J. M. Corner, Edinburgh, from photographs chiefly by Magnus Jackson, F.S.A. Scot., Perth, Photographer to the Scottish Arboricultural Society.
