Excerpt from Yorkshire Marriage Registers, Vol. 3: West Riding, Doncaster, Part 1, (1557-1784)The Doncaster Registers have literally passed through the fire, and been burned. In their present condition they are truly a memorial of the courage and daring of those who res cued them from the fire, and of the exceeding patience, skill, and devotion of those who had a hand in their restoration.Any one wishing to study the history of the Older church of St. George's, and the record of the fire, should consult The History and Description of St. George's Church, Doncaster, by the Rev. Canon John Edward Jackson, printed for the Author 1855, from which and other sources the following brief sum mary has been made, with special reference to the Registers. It was in the night of Sunday Feb. 27th 1853, soon after midnight, that a strong glare was seen to be issuing from the two easternmost windows of the North Aisle of the Church. It was soon apparent that the Church was on fire, and the fire spread with appalling rapidity.About two oclock the Roof Of the Nave fell in with an awful crash, and with it also fell, forwards into the Church yard, the greater part of the West end, thus admitting a strong draught of air which drove the fire Eastward.About a quarter past two the roof of the South Chancel fell in, the lower part Of the Tower then became ignited, and the ¿ames streamed upward toward the belfry door.About three oclock an attempt was made to rescue the Parish Registers, and Communion Plate from an iron safe in the Vestry. The Fire-engines were directed to this point, and under torrents Of water, in the midst Of excessive heat, it was successful.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
