Focus is the genre complex of son, which can be understood as a genuinely Caribbean music genre. The genre complex will be discussed within the specific context of the Dominican Republic, analyzing the impacts of changing social and political conditions throughout the 20th century. The author spent 6 months in Santo Domingo and Santiago de los Caballeros in 2006. Her field work encompassed narrative interviews, field notes, participant observations, video and audio recording, as well as short interviews.
